Recently in footwear news, track and field 800-meter runner Boris Berian officially signed with New Balance. The contract came just as the U.S. Olympic Team Trials began, ending on July 10. Berian, who is the 800-meter world indoor champion, finally had the opportunity to sign with New Balance six months after initially trying to sign with the athletic shoe company. Berian had been in a dispute with Nike after signing a brief contract with the company through last year.
The contract Berian signed with Nike gave the company the right to match a competitor’s offer following the expiration of the contract. According to news sources, in January of this year New Balance offered Berian a three-year, $375,000 contract, however Nike wanted to match the offer. Berian and his agent wanted to sign with New Balance regardless, and a six-month legal battle began. Nike dropped the lawsuit against Berian, and he officially signed with New Balance as of June 30th.
While Berian has been without an endorsement thus far this year, he has won thousands in prize money over the last four months from his wins at the Prefontaine Classic, World Indoors, and USATF Indoors.
Nike decided to drop the lawsuit, saying that the company recognized this is a significant time for Boris. Due to the fact that the judge decided to delay the ruling until the eve of the Olympic trials, Nike wanted to eliminate the distraction the lawsuit could cause for the runner.
