As a wholesale shoe distributor who has been in business for more than 70 years, we know there are all kinds of foot problems from blisters, calluses, and corns to ingrown toenails and toenail fungus. If you’re trying to avoid toenail fungus or already have it, there are a few things you should know that will help you avoid it, or ensure it won’t recur once you’ve gotten rid of it.
Here are our tips:
The first one is a no-brainer – keep your toes clean and dry thoroughly after showering! Other than this . . .
Clip your toenails the right way. Toenails should be cut straight across, not downward toward the outer edges. Once clipped, use a nail file to file away and sharp or jagged areas.
Don’t go barefoot in public areas. Locker rooms, showers at the local swimming pool, even the area around the swimming pool are all areas that are ideal breeding grounds for fungus. In any moist environment where lots of people congregate, wear shower shoes or flip-flops.
As for your own tub/shower, disinfect regularly. You’ve probably seen a small area or two of mold or fungus in your shower. This can be eliminated using a bleach-based cleanser and a little scrubbing. While we’re talking about disinfecting, also spray your shoes with an antibacterial spray, and wash socks in hot water. If they’re white, add bleach to the wash.
Antifungal powder sprinkled in your footwear can help keep the nasty fungus at bay. Before you put on your socks and shoes, sprinkle a bit of the powder in both. According to the American College of Foot & Ankle Orthopedics & Medicine, this works to prevent the growth of fungi spores.
Now for the shoes
Wear those that fit well, and don’t touch your toenails. Shoes with a wide toe box are a good choice, because your toes won’t be cramped up.
Canvas, leather, and other materials that are breathable are the best choice in footwear for those apt to develop toenail fungus. You want shoes that allow air to circulate, which helps keep your feet drier and prevents excess sweating.
Rotate shoes. If you’re an athlete or runner, it’s not a good idea to wear the running shoes you wore yesterday if they’re still damp with sweat. Have two pair on hand, and alternate wearing one pair one day, the other pair the next day.
Follow the above suggestions, and you can be free of nasty looking toenail fungus!
