Unfortunately, many runners suffer from black toenails, a condition caused by frequent rubbing of the toes against the front of the running shoe as you run. Runners may experience swelling during hot summer months, which can make the problem even worse. Other aggravating conditions include running downhill, or in wet shoes during seasons that bring about significant rain or moisture.
Black toenail isn’t a serious condition, and is a result of broken blood capillaries. Thankfully, there are a few things runners can do to help prevent black toenails and the eventual separating of the nail from the bed. Some of these remedies include trimming your toenails on a regular basis, wearing the right size running shoe, and wearing wicking socks, which absorb excess moisture and take it away from the feet.
It’s also helpful to tighten laces near the toe area of the shoe to help prevent sliding of the feet, particularly if you run downhill often.
How do you know if the running shoes you wear are the right size? Make sure that, when standing, there is a minimum of 1/2 inch of space between the toes and the front end of the shoe. While you don’t want too much room in the toe area, you do want ample room for toes to move without being wedged tightly against the front of the shoe.
If despite all your efforts you develop a black toenail, don’t become too concerned; most runners do, and it’s best to let the nail come off on its own. Don’t pull at it or clip it, and keep in mind a new toenail will grow back in its place. Should you notice any infection or redness around or under the toenail, contact your doctor.
