Recently, UK-based information technology firm SimilarWeb conducted a study to determine which products were the biggest drivers of traffic to five retailers who sell multiple product categories. As a global distributor of wholesale footwear, we naturally find this type of information interesting – and useful.
In the study, the firm concentrated on the search strategy used by Saks Fifth Avenue, Zappos, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Macy’s. After analyzing the data, it was determined that terms related to footwear and shoes accounted for half of the organic searches leading to these retailers’ websites from the 4th quarter of 2014 through the 3rd quarter of 2015. In paid search campaigns, 55% of search terms leading to these websites were footwear-related.
The terms used in organic search by consumers included general search terms including “winter boots,” “wide calf boots,” and “shoes.” In paid search, the top 10 terms used by consumers included Ugg Boots, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, and Kate Spade among others. This was mostly during the holiday season in 2014 when consumers were shopping for specific brands.
Interestingly, Zappos receives more traffic from organic searches by consumers looking for shoes than the other retailers analyzed in the study.
It seems that when it comes to fashion, footwear dominates! Consumers do love their shoes.
