Neuropathy is a condition that occurs in about 70% of people who have diabetes, and may cause an individual to lose feeling in their hands or feet, even leading to infection. It is important that diabetics take proper care of their feet in an effort to avoid injury. As distributors of wholesale footwear around the world, we have a few tips to help maintain foot health and prevent injuries, which can be very serious in those with diabetes.
Inspect your feet for cracked skin or sores regularly. Because nerve damage can make feet feel numb, many don’t realize they have a sore or that there is a change in the color of their feet. Daily inspection is important to catch any problems early on.
Avoid going barefoot. Again, neuropathy or nerve damage can make it difficult to sense when stepping on rocks, splinters, even glass. Foot infections can be very serious for those with diabetes, so always wear shoes – even when inside your home.
Be sure to dry feet thoroughly after showering, bathing, or swimming. Moist skin can result in infection. After bathing, thoroughly dry all areas of feet including between the toes. It’s also important to remove sweaty socks and wet shoes immediately and dry off the moisture.
If you develop corns, calluses, bunions, or other foot conditions, see a podiatrist promptly. For diabetics, even calluses can become infected – so don’t ignore any problems when it comes to your feet.
If you smoke, stop. Nicotine can decrease circulation, and diabetics have enough of a problem as it is. Smoking compromises healthy blood vessels, and it’s important to keep as much oxygen-rich blood as possible flowing to the feet.
Choose the right socks and footwear. Those with diabetes should wear socks with no seams; those made from materials such as cotton that help control moisture. Shoes should provide adequate coverage for the tops and bottoms of feet, and have no seams on the inside that could rub the feet and cause sores, blisters, or calluses. In addition, shoes with ample room in the toe box are a good choice.
Taking care of your feet is essential when you have diabetes. Hopefully the tips above will help keep your feet healthy and free from injury or infection!
