December 1st was Giving Tuesday, an initiative around the world that was created in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y and designed to use the power of social media to encourage people and businesses to donate to a variety of charitable causes around the world during the holiday season. This year, Giving Tuesday has enjoyed an increase of nearly 500% in terms of online donations, according to a recent article at Footwear News.
Some of those participating include more than 30,000 partners across 68 countries, including footwear retailers and individuals. Katie Couric, who has a huge social media following, donated dozens of pairs to Dress for Success, an organization dedicated to helping women return to the workplace.
Other shoe brands and retailers participating in #GivingTuesday included Reebok, New Balance, Soles 4 Souls, and other retailers including Old Navy, Ralph Lauren, and Rue La La. On this special day, New Balance launched a month-long giving campaign For each #NBgivesback Instagram or Twitter post showing a consumer’s shoe donation to an organization of their choice, New Balance will donate $5.00, with a maximum of $100,000, to Good Sports, Inc. to help provide brand new sports and fitness equipment for children in high poverty communities across the United States. Reebok was encouraging the athletic brand’s customers to donate in support of Fight for Peace, an organization that combines the teaching of martial arts and boxing with personal development and education.
Soles 4 Souls encourages people to donate shoes that are “gently” worn, and also provides for those in need for every $1 donated to the cause. Their mission continues year-round.
If you’re not familiar with #GivingTuesday, it is a day in the U.S. that refers to the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and was created to encourage giving all around the world at the beginning of the holiday season.
