Those with wide feet often make the mistake of thinking all they need to do is go up to the next shoe size to enjoy comfort. Everyone knows that many shoes come in a variety of widths, and there’s a reason for that! Some people have wide feet, others have extremely wide feet, and others find comfort in wider shoes when they suffer from edema, diabetes, hammertoes, or other conditions. From AA to E, how do you sort through all those widths?
First, be aware that the difference in widths is only 1/8 of an inch, so your feet won’t look huge when wearing wider width shoes. Here’s a quick guide to shoe widths, even for those with feet that are more narrow than the average foot.
For women with narrow feet, width sizing is usually AA; for men, a narrow is a C. These sizes are ideal for those with thin feet, narrow heels, or who have high arches.
Average or “medium” shoes are what you find the most of in the majority of shoe stores, as these are the “normal” sizes that most people wear. A medium width for women is a B, and for men a D – although you may not find an indication of the width on the average or medium shoe.
If you’re a woman with wide or flat feet, a C or D width usually fits best. For men with a wide or flat foot, the proper width would likely be E. Essentially, the flatter your feet are, the wider shoe you will need. C, D, and E are also indicated (depending on whether you’re a man or woman) for those with bunions or hammertoes.
What if you have extra-wide feet? For women, an E indicates extra-wide; for men, an EE is an extra wide shoe. If a shoe indicates it’s an EEE, that means it’s even wider.
Not everyone has a “normal” size foot, however there are shoes for every size and need; footwear that not only feels more comfortable but is also accommodating for certain issues, including edema and diabetes.
